Winter Skin Care For Acne Prone Skin

Every season affects skin, hair & health. We must adapt to seasonal care. With the start of winter skin starts crying for moisture every now and then. Applying heavy moisturizing lotions & creams is fine for dry skin, but if you facial skin is acne prone, you have to watch before you apply just any cream. Winter is really tricky for skin specially for our kind of skin which is oily & acne prone on top of being ultra sensitive. Be it any skin type there are some moisture needs. We must maintain those moisture levels in skin to keep it healthy & happy.

This article is brought to you by #WinterExpress hosted by Minakshi, Shubhada & Amrit Kaur. Thanks Preety for introducing me.

Coming back to the article, I would say, my skin is a freak. I really mean it. It always keeps me on toe. During summer it shines like a disco ball. It sweats like crazy during monsoon. And let come winter, it turns dull & rough. Acne is like it’s BFF be it any season. So While dealing with seasonal issues, I always need to make sure I don’t use anything that can break out my skin. Since it’s winter I am going to write few very essential things that can protect skin from harsh dry weather and acne genie bacteria too.

Ditch Those Harsh Cleansers

So you have a skin care regimen. You think you can’t live without using your Glycolic & Salicylic based cleanser. You must use acne face washes to keep acne in check? But I must warn you that It might not be the best practice all year round at least. These cleansers are stealing your moisture. You need to feel like applying more moisture. But the natural moisture that has is being stripped off your skin can’t be easily replaced. Choose gentle cleansers such as Cetaphil or honey based cleanser. If you can’t take out strong cleansers out of your routine, limit their usage. Use them alternate days.

These days I am also loving this powdered green tea cleanser which works effectively to cleanse skin without drying it out.

Your Type Of Moisturizer

You facial skin need moisture, but the amount & intensity of moisture depends upon your skin type. If your skin is acne prone then slathering heavy moisture on your skin might clog your pores, resulting into a breading ground for acne genic p-bacteria.

I mostly rely on Clean n Clear Oil Free Moisturizer which is lightweight & water based. But if you want more moisture then Neutrogena Oil Free Moisturizer & Plum Green Tea Mattifying Moisturizer to quench the thirst of your skin.

Avoid Comedogenic Ingredients

Using natural products for skin care are mostly safe bet but we can’t always use all natural products. It’s important to keep an eye on the ingredients. Some skin care items might contain highly comedogenic ingredients (the ingredients that can clog your pores).

I generally steer clear of Cocoa Butter, Coconut Oil, Dimethicone , Mineral oil, Pigments, Dyes etc in my skin care and makeup products.

Lightweight Serums For Extra Care

Serums are very mostly lightweight in consistency but are power packed with moisturizing agents. It is always a good idea to rely on serums than creams for special concerns. Serums generally takes care of your moisture needs as well as brighten your skin tone while giving anti ageing effects. Most of the serums are lightweight and sans of any comdeogenic  ingredients too. For example, I like to use Vitamin C based serums to fade away scars while essential oil blend to get a glowy skin.

Sun Protection For Acne Prone Skin

Gone are the days when sun protection meant using heavy & thick creams. These days even the sunscreens are lightweight. They are specially formulated for oily & acne prone skin. But if you still are not sure about a chemical sunscreen, you can use a physical sunscreen without worrying about breakouts.

Confused about sunscreens? Read this -> Chemical sunscreen VS Physical Sunscreen

It is important to use sunscreen during winter because we really like to soak some sun during cold days. And that’s when the devil sun plays it’s trick. The harmful chemical rays damages our skin. Which might result into skin darkening, dark spots, pigmentation, wrinkles and every other ugly thing you can think about.

If you are a frequent host to breakouts, your skin might be having scars which gets dark if you do not use sun protection and takes ages to fade away. So please get some sun protection. I am currently loving La Shield Gel Sunscreen which is a perfect fit for oily & acne prone skin.

Don’t Overdo Clay Masks

You cannot use heavy moisturizing face masks during winter but it does not mean that you can use clay masks to keep acne on bay. Clay masks are nice option during summer & monsoon. But during winter they can be drying. Try to indulge in hydrating face masks such as honey, oatmeal & rice face mask. Alone honey can treat your skin well because it is high in moisture & anti bacterial properties. You can also use aloe vera pulp, orange pulp or even mashed grapes to give a fruit boost to your skin during winter.

Water

drink enough water

The more you drink, the more skin & health benefits you get. Water does not only hydrate you from inside, but also flushes out your bad toxins which causes many skin problems. Stay youthful & clear of acne by drinking more water than you usually do.

Also try to have seasonal fruits & vegetables more to stay healthy & impart a natural glow on your face. I hope I succeeded to write something meaningful & helpful for you. Please feel free to post suggestions, queries & lovely comments. Next station to the blog train is Anchal’s The Mum Story Blog.

Much Love

Nisha ❤
