Do You Need A Night Cream? : #thebasicsseries

A night cream, is a specially formulated cream to be used at night before you retire to your bed. But why do you need one? Isn’t it cosmetic industry’s gimmick to sell more products in the name of night cream? Maybe, maybe not. Let’s find out.

Do you ever wonder why a baby’s skin is so soft and plumpy? The reason is the natural moisture that a baby’s skin contains. This moisture keeps on depleting as the baby grows. This moisture must be reverted back to the skin to keep it healthy and glowing. Pollution and today’s life style can play havoc on one’s skin. Night time is the time when the skin repairs itself. It’s the best time to cater the extra needs of an ageing, pigmented skin. Hence Night Creams sound reasonable.

Type Of Night Creams

Moisture Rich

Some night creams are high on moisture. They are thick and creamy. They contain moisture rich contents to deliver hydration to thirsty skin. Day might not be a good time to use heavy creams, but during night you can pamper your  skin.

Anti Ageing

After crossing 25, one should really look into using anti ageing products be it natural or cosmetic. Anti ageing night creams deliver anti oxidants to skin, so that it can reverse or slow down the ageing effects on skin and refine the texture of the skin.

Special Concern

Lifestyle, pollution, eating habits, there are lots of reasons, we develop issues on skin like pigmentation, acne, wrinkles etc. To address these type of concerns, there are night cream that target these issues.

Benefits Of Using A Night Cream

  • Addresses dull, uneven & tired skin issues.
  • Gives Anti Ageing Effects.
  • Helps to fade away scars and irons out wrinkles.
  • Improves skin texture over time.

Difference Between Day & Night Cream

A night cream contains concentrated ingredients for deep penetration to restore skin. A day cream is ideally a light cream which might or might not contain the sun protection factor. If you are happy with the moisture level that your skin receives from your day moisturiser or cream, then you don’t need another night cream to add on to your regimen. But if you feel your skin needs special attention, like anti ageing or extra moisture, you might look out for a night cream.

If your day cream contains SPF, you should not use it during night, a plain moisturiser would be better.

How To Choose A Night Cream

As any other skin care product, a night cream should be selected based on your skin type and skin concern. If a night cream works for your sister, does not mean that it will work for you also in case you two have different skin type.

Oily skin beauties should opt for light textured, preferably gel/water based creams. While Dry skinned girls can go for heavy duty creams.

Combination/Normal skin can choose something light but hydrating.

Also skin concern is important. Choose an anti ageing or deep moisturising cream based on your requirement.

How To Use A Night Cream

It’s no rocket science to use a night cream. Take pea size amount of the cream and dot over your face & neck. Now gently massage your face and neck extending till your decollete. A good night cream will get absorbed nicely.

Can You Use A Night Cream At Day?

I would say please never do that. You can use a day time moisturiser at night, but vice versa is just not advised. Reason? Reason is the fact that most of the night creams are formulated with powerful ingredients which might harm your skin during day time as you expose your skin to the sun. Like Vitamin C, retinol and other power packed ingredients can make your skin photo sensitive if exposed to the sun.

It is advised to use a good sun protection during day if you are using special night creams at night to maintain the effect of your night regimen.
